He was born on December 19th, 1958, into a family with a long musical history. His mother was a piano teacher, and one of his sisters played the violin while the other the viola. He often said that music played a very integral part of his family life.
His grandfather was Russian, and Steven was influenced by Daniil Shafran, who was one of the greatest Russian cellists. Just as Daniil, Steven has always played his notes sincerely, and his music evokes a lot of feelings since he always speaks from the soul.
Since 1997 he has been the Artistic Director of The International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove in Cornwall and has organized a large number of music festivals. He also gives frequent masterclasses around the world.
